Elizabeth's Poem
Let me be me
Let me be me,
Not a construct of me,
Nor a version of me,
Or an abstract of me,
But just plain old me,
Is that okay with you, for me just to be me?
Why can’t I be free?
To be who I need to be,
Instead of bending to fit in with your idea of me,
Why should I pretend to be, anything other than me?
When it’s such a blooming effort being who you want me to be,
Wouldn’t it be better for us both, if I was just able to be me?
For being me is the only way I know how to be,
Although God knows I’ve tried being who you expect me to be,
So here we are, we’ve come full circle,
Having oscillated between that girl who you knew me to be,
And this would-be woman waiting to declare herself as me,
It’s been a long time coming, but I’m glad I can now be me,
For the truth of the matter is that’s the only way I know how to be,
Blame God, he’s responsible for making me, me.
